Travel to Sevastopol for adoption

Postby Siyangephoyadx » Thu Dec 11, 2008 1:12 am

My wife and I want to travel to Sevastopol to complete an adoption. We may have to stay there about a month. I don't speak Russian. What are the best accommodations I can get for the least money? We will probably be traveling in March or April. What are some problems I should be aware of?

Hello Siyangephoyadx and welcome to My English Forum!
I think the best accommodation for the money is to rent a private apartment. It'll be better than a hotel, for sure. March - April is not a vacation season, so accomodation prices shouldn't be so high as they are in summer.
I don't think there will be too many problems, but the main one is the language, of course ;)
Have you already been to Ukraine or it will be your first visit?

Thanks for your response. It will be my first visit. I suppose I will be spending about one month there. I have already checked some apartment sites on the computer and have found them quite reasonable, but I am not rich and was looking for the best deal. :D

I have a friend who goes to Sevastopol quite often in summer. He is from the UK. Seems he knows somebody who rents apartments over there. I'll check it out and let you know :sunny:

I would be glad to hear about that. It would also be good to get a place near the orphanage number one (ул.Кулакова, 1 Севастополь) or near the official building where adoption hearings are conducted. I believe I will also have to visit the SDAPRC in Kiev. I hope it will be a fun trip, too. Could I also provide some English tutoring or teaching assistance while in Ukraine? :D

I had been in Ukraine for 31 days and left yesterday. It was an awesome trip and I brought back the ultimate souvenir. I spent most of my time in Ochakov and Mykolaiv.

I very much enjoyed my month in Ukraine. I was in Kyiv only about four days. When I first flew in, I thought the airport was smelly and dirty. Our apartment was on Trehsviatitelskaya Street. It was a good location for us and nice enough, but it wasn't cleaned very well for us, and we were charged for an extra day we weren't there. I went to the SDA (to get permission to visit an orphan) and thought the building was in terrible condition. The packs of dogs roaming the streets were disturbing, too. The street vendors were very nice. Of course I had to buy souvenirs. I wanted traditional Ukranian souvenirs, but my translator told me I had gotten traditionally Russian souvenirs. I then took an overnight train to Mykolayiv. The train ride was nice, but I was told to be very careful at the train stations in both cities. Then, I took a taxi to Ochakiv. There, I was not well received at the orphanage - they tried to convince my son not to come with us. In Ochakiv, I stayed in an older lady's apartment. The apartment was not modern. The translator I used would not stay there, and she is used to things Ukranian. However, the translator I used was wonderful. The taxi driver I used was also wonderful. He found me another apartment which was very modern. It was very near the beach. The beach was in an awful condition with broken bottles everywhere. Adults in the apartment building were neither friendly nor unfriendly. The children were very nice and always tried to speak to me in English. Then, back in Kyiv, I found some of the attractive pats of the city. Overall, I was treated well; no one was unpleasant to me. I would enjoy going back again.
