When I want to tell people about the beaches, should I use present or past tense?
The island was great. The beaches sand was as soft as silk.
Is the aforementioned sentences correct?
Can I use present tense by replacing was with is. Because the island is great until now, not only in the past. The same goes to the beaches sand. It is still as soft as silk until now.

I agree. When you are telling about your experience, it happened in the past and you should use past tense.
However, when you are telling about the island, it still exists and the presence of the sand and surf exists now in the present tense. So, you have choices. When I went to Puerto Rico, the beaches were brown and cleaned pretty well. If you go there, I think you will see they are clean and brown.
